Adri\u00e0 Tauste Campo, PhD, is an Associate Professor under the Serra-H\u00fanter Program<\/a> and Group Leader of the nCoDe Lab<\/a> at Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya<\/a> (UPC), Spain. Dr. Tauste Campo obtained his degrees in Mathematics and Telecommunications Engineering at UPC (2006), his Master degree in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University<\/a> , US (2009), and his doctorate degree in Information Theory at the University of Cambridge<\/a>, UK (2011). During his postdoctoral stage, he obtained a <\/span>Marie-Curie fellowship at Universitat Pompeu Fabra<\/a>, Spain, which was later followed by positions at two Medical Research centres (Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute and BarcelonaBeta Brain Research Centre, Barcelona, Spain). His current research spans two lines of investigation. First, he makes use of <\/span>electrophysiological data and advanced computational tools to study <\/span>the interconnections between the problems of neural coding\/variability and neural communication. The goal of this line of research is to investigate plausible information processing mechanisms explaining cognitive task performance in primates. Second, he relies on human intracranial EEG recordings from drug-resistance epileptic patients to identify the spatial extent of epileptic network, including the epileptic focus and related areas, and the dynamics of epileptic networks, specially during the hours\/days preceding an epileptic seizure. The goal of this line of research is to develop new diagnostic techniques and biomarkers for epilepsy pre-surgical diagnosis and seizure prevention that can be transferred via software applications<\/a> to improve the state-of-the-art treatment of epileptic patients.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bel\u00e9n Sancrist\u00f3bal<\/h3>\n

Bel\u00e9n Sancrist\u00f3bal is a postdoctoral researcher at the nCoDe lab. She holds a BSc in Physics (2006) and an MSc in Biophysics (2008) by the Universitat de Barcelona. She also holds a PhD in Computational and Applied Physics (2013) by the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya. She has conducted research at the Max-Planck Institute for Brain Research (Germany), the University of Ottawa (Canada) and at national experimental and theoretical laboratories. She has supervised undergraduate and master\u2019s theses, and a doctoral thesis, with publications in several journals. Her projects on the interaction between sounds and cortical activity have been funded by the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre and the \u201cJunior Leader\u201d fellowship from la Caixa Foundation. She has joined our group to study intracortical dynamics under electrical stimulation of epileptic patients as a potential means to guide therapeutic neuromodulation of epilepsy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Manel Vila-Vidal<\/h3>\n

Manel Vila-Vidal is currently CEO and Cofounder of the spin-off company BrainFocus Labs<\/a> under the Torres-Quevedo fellowship. Manel holds a BSc in Mathematics and a BSc in Physics from Universitat de Barcelona (2015), an MSc in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature from Universitat de Barcelona (2017) and a PhD in Biomedicine from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (2021). To pursue his PhD research, he received funding from \u201claCaixa\u201d Foundation. In his PhD thesis, he developed clinical biomarkers for intracranial EEG (iEEG) pre-surgical diagnosis in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, and investigated the interplay between local and global scales in brain activity in the context of simple cognitive tasks. His current research aims to identify the spatial extent of the epileptic network, to map propagation pathways during seizures and to understand the dynamics of epileptic networks in the transition from the pre-ictal to the ictal state. He is also investigating the neural correlates of stimulus processing and working memory during cognitive tasks with iEEG, and <\/span>brain functional alterations in psychopathology with fMRI. <\/span><\/p>\n

Carlota Pag\u00e8s-Portabella<\/h3>\n

Carlota Pag\u00e8s-Portabella is currently the Product and regulatory Affairs Manager of the spin-off company BrainFocus Labs under the Torres-Quevedo fellowship. Carlota graduated in Environmental Biology (BSc) from Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona (UAB) and in a Degree in Modern Music and Jazz from Conservatori del Liceu (Berklee School of Music). Later, Carlota became interested in neuroscience and obtained an MSc in Brain and Cognition from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF, 2017). Currently, Carlota pursues her Ph.D. in Biomedicine at the Center for Brain and Cognition (UPF) under the supervision of Prof. Juan Manuel Toro Soto. To pursue her Ph.D. research she received an F.I. grant from AGAUR. In her doctoral dissertation, she proposed an interdisciplinary project and benefited from her music knowledge and electrophysiology to understand the effects of musical training in the neural signatures of processing unexpected events. Besides her current research, Carlota is interested in the therapeutic applications of music in clinical contexts and aims to contribute through basic research in developing more informed approaches to musicotherapy.<\/p>\n

Nicolas Medina is a PhD student at Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya (UPC), Spain. Nicolas holds a BSc in Electronic Engineering from Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica del Per\u00fa (2016), an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from Universitat de Barcelona (2021) and now is pursuing the PhD in Computational and Applied Physics at UPC. He did his master\u2019s thesis on computational neuroscience and he has recently joined the group in order to develop of a real-time clinical monitoring system for seizure prevention in drug-resistant epileptic patients with intracranial recordings.<\/p>\n

Ferran Craven is a master’s student in Biomedical Engineering at Universitat de Barcelona (UB) – Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya (UPC), Spain. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology Engineering from UPC (2022). He did his bachelor’s thesis on neural networks applied to medical data processing and is currently working on neural regeneration techniques at Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC). He has joined the group to study connectivity measures of SEEG signals for seizure onset zone identification on epilepsy patients.<\/p>\n

Maiol Valent\u00ed holds an MSc in Computational Biomedical Engineering from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (2024), a Postgraduate Degree in Artificial Intelligence with Deep Learning from Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya (2023), and a Bachelor\u2019s in Multimedia (Engineering branch) from Universitat de Vic (2019). His work focuses on the analysis and integration of intracranial EEG data from epileptic patients using machine learning and deep learning methods. Prior to joining the group, he worked as a software engineer in projects involving AI, blockchain, IoT, and web development<\/p>\n
